HAYSVILLE — The Winfield High School boys swim team continues to show marked improvement in the Vikings’ return from Christmas break.

Winfield placed third in the five-team Campus Invitational, behind the host Colts and Wichita Independent. Independent swept the three relay events, including an upset when the “B” team defeated the runner-up “A” team in the 400-yard freestyle that ended the meet.

“Each of the 12 guys scored and they all contributed points toward the team score,” WHS coach Dustin Durbin said.

The Vikings’ 200-yard medley relay team posted a state consideration time for the first time this year. Bow Gray, Trevor Martin, Caden Roark and Albert Compala finished the event in 1 minute, 57.79 seconds, good for third place.

The same quartet placed fourth in the 200 free relay (1:43.87).

Roark finished third in the 200 freestyle in 2:00.98, hitting the state consideration time for the second time this season. His second-place finish in the 500 free (5:22.82) lowered the state consideration time he already reached by .41 of a second.

“I figured that if you factor in relay splits, we had a total of 47 swims Thursday night, and the boys swam their best-ever times in 33 of those 47 swims,” Durbin said.

Gray was third in the 100 butterfly (1:10.34), two spots ahead of Kyler Phrakonekham, who shaved more than four seconds off of his previous best.

Bryce Dolch was fourth in the 500 free (6:57.39), nearly two seconds better than before. Mark Thompson recorded the best improvement for the Vikings, shaving nearly 21 1/2 seconds off of his previous best in that event.

Angelo Iodice was nearly 20 seconds better in the 200 free, and Seth Warren took almost 19 seconds off of his previous best in the 100 free. Maksym Khomenko shaved almost 16 1/2 seconds off in the 100 backstroke, while Phrakonekham was almost 12 seconds better in the 50 fly.

“Every single guy on the ‘B’ medley team swam a new PR and together they were 10 1/2 seconds under their entry time, which was a composite of their prior best splits added together,” Durbin said. “Also, every single guy on the ‘B’ 400 free relay team swam a new PR and together they were 27 seconds under their entry time, which was a composite of their best splits added together.”

The Vikings are back in the water at 4:15 p.m. Thursday at their own invitational at the White P.E. Building on the campus of Southwestern College. Buhler, Coffeyville, El Dorado, Independence, Maize, Maize South, Parsons, Rose Hill, Wichita Classical, Wichita Collegiate and Wichita Independent are expected to compete.
