Vikings send half dozen grapplers to KSHSAA Class 4A State Championships

Winfield High School junior Steele Morin grabs a double-leg takedown on Hunter Noeller  of Augusta in the first round at 170 pounds Friday at the Class 4A Regional Championships at Wellington High School. Morin pinned his AV-CTL D-III nemesis in 3:18 and advanced to the championship finals.

WELLINGTON — Six members of the Winfield High School wrestling team qualified for State, with two Vikings advancing to title matches Saturday at the two-day Class 4A Regional Championships at Wellington High School.

The 4A No. 7-ranked Vikings placed sixth in the 14-team Regional, won by No. 2-ranked Andale.

Senior Steele Morin and junior Braden Ledford both took home silver medals with second-place finishes and will compete next Friday and Saturday at the KSHSAA Class 4A State Championships at Tony’s Pizza Events Center in Salina.

Morin, ranked No. 2 at 170 pounds, pinned his way to the finals, including a 59-second fall in the semifinals against Ethan Irvine of Mulvane.

The title bout against No. 3-ranked David Leck of Rose Hill went into double-overtime, where Leck used a reversal and two near-falls to pull out a 10-3 decision.

Morin will take a 17-8 record into the State meet.

Ledford, ranked No. 3 at 126 pounds, recorded back-to-back pins, including a 38-second quarterfinal fall against Eric Tucker of Towanda-Circle. Ledford used a reversal midway through the second period — his second reversal of the match — to defeat Kaiser Pelland of Pratt 4-2 in the semifinals.

Ledford dropped a 3-1 decision to No. 1-ranked Hector Serratos of Andale in the title match and takes a 32-6 record into the Big Show.

Chance Price and Cody Brenn both bounced back from losses to claim third-place medals.

Price, a senior ranked fifth at 152, fell to Jake Knowles of El Dorado in the semifinals. He bounced back through the back side, pulling out a 10-5 decision against Higan Thompson of Pratt for the third-place medal and is 38-9 entering State.

A penalty point with eight seconds remaining cost Brenn a shot at the 138-pound title. The 138-pound freshman fell 2-1 to Adam Mendoza of Hugoton in that semifinal bout, but rebounded on the back side to claim the third-place medal. Brenn is 17-14 entering State.

“Kody wasn’t much of a surprise. He’s a freshman, but he has wrestled really good kids close,” WHS coach Nick McGrew said. “Luckily for us he peaked at the right time.”

Senior Zach Phillips and junior Trevin Biddle punched their tickets to the Big Show before settling for fourth-place finishes.

The No. 5-ranked Phillips pinned Collin Scott of El Dorado in their 220-pound consolation match to qualify, but an escape point with 1:17 left in regulation cost him the third-place medal in a 1-0 loss to No. 6-ranked Jace Garrison of Ulysses.

Biddle’s ticket to State came in the form of a pin midway through the third period in their 160-pound match. Biddle fell to Nakia Holmes of Ulysses in the third-place bout, and takes a 17-11 record to State.

Senior Cole Finney came within one win of reaching State at 182, dropping a 5-2 decision to Iziah Cook of Pratt in the elimination match.

Junior Eli Lynch also was one victory from State, falling 9-0 to Tommy Rogers of Rose Hill in the elimination bout.
