Jordan notches double-double as ’Dawgs top Valley Center in OT

Arkansas City High School senior Jamauri Jordan grabs an offensive rebound Monday night against Salina South in The Dawg Pound. Jordan, who just missed a double-double with 15 points and nine rebounds Monday, recorded the feat Tuesday night against Valley Center with a 21-point, 14-rebound effort in the Bulldogs’ 57-54 overtime victory.

A five-point fourth quarter threatened to undo a solid three quarters of play Tuesday night for the Arkansas City High School boys basketball team.

The resilient Bulldogs, however, saw four players contribute to a nine-point overtime period as the Bulldogs escaped The Dawg Pound with a 57-54 victory in an AV-CTL D-II barnburner.

The Bulldogs (4-4, 2-2 AV-CTL D-II) used an 18-9 second quarter to build a 27-18 lead and still led 29-21 at the break.

Valley Center cut the deficit to five, 43-38, entering the fourth quarter, and pulled even 49-49 to send the game into overtime.

Brock Merz scored four of his nine points in the extra session, including a pair of free throws for the Bulldogs, who were a solid 20 of 27 from the foul line in the game and 7 of 8 in overtime.

Jamauri Jordan drained 11 of 13 from the line, including a pair in OT, and led all scorers with 21 points.

Cadon Clark sank a pair of extra-time freebies, and Andrew Schnackenberg, who like Clark buried a 3-pointer in the first quarter, hit 1 of 2 from the line in OT and 4 of 7 overall, finishing with 11 points off the bench.

The Bulldogs shot 34 percent (16 of 47) from the floor, but were just 5 of 22 from beyond the arc. However, a 42-31 rebounding edge helped Ark City to offset 19 turnovers.

Eli Issacs finished with 10 points and Jakob Byrne added 15 for the Hornets (3-4, 1-2), who were 16 of 29 from the line.

Valley Center shot 35.6 (16 of 4) from the floor, including 6 of 21 from deep, and outscored the Bulldogs 26-9 in points off turnovers.

The teams combined for 47 points off the bench.
