McPHERSON — The Southwestern College women’s basketball team picked up a big road victory Saturday against McPherson College, winning the KCAC battle 63-59.

Wins in the KCAC are never easy, especially on the road, but the Lady Builders (5-3, 2-2 KCAC) jumped out to a 17-point halftime lead and held McPherson to just 21 points in the first half.

Southwestern held the Lady Bulldogs (5-5, 1-3) to just 33-percent shooting on the afternoon and less than 10 percent (2 of 21) from behind the 3-point arc.

McPherson did not go away quietly, though, using a big third quarter to tighten the gap to 48-42 heading into the fourth quarter.

The two teams traded buckets to start the quarter, but the Lady Bulldogs finally broke through with just more than six minutes remaining, bursting on a 7-0 run in a three-minute span to turn a five-point deficit into a 57-55 lead.

With 2 1/2 minutes remaining, Southwestern shifted the momentum away with an underneath basket by junior Ashley Carrillo to tie the game. Carrillo then connected on another shot down low off of a McPherson turnover to regain the lead.

The Lady Bulldogs had a stop on the other end, but the Lady Builders prevented the game-tying score and ultimately iced the game with two final free throws.

Senior Jazmyne Laskey, who hit the final two free throws to seal the game, finished with a team-high 15 points on 6-of-9 shooting to go with seven rebounds. Senior Marissa Evans tallied 14 points and five boards, while Carrillo added 10 points off the bench.

The Lady Builders, who have already bypasses their wins from a year ago, play at 6 p.m. today at No. 12 ranked Sterling. The Lady Warriors (6-2, 4-0) rolled past Saint Mary 85-54 on Saturday.
