LINDSBORG — The Southwestern College football team earned its second straight victory Saturday, scoring 27 unanswered points to defeat Bethany 34-10 in KCAC action.
The Moundbuilders (2-2, 2-1 KCAC) faced an early deficit in the foggy and misty weather when quarterback Austin Denson scored on an 11-yard keeper to give the Swedes (1-3, 1-3) a 7-0 lead.
Southwestern wasted little time responding, tying the game on a 27-yard touchdown pass from William Mueller to Edrick Gonzales.
Wyatt Townsend’s 28-yard field goal on the ensuing possession was the last time Bethany scored.
SC sophomore Freddy Botello booted a 45-yard field goal on the first play of the second quarter.
Freshman Yizalle Whitfield, who opened the season as Southwestern’s starting quarterback, connected with Woody Banks on a 34-yard touchdown pass midway through the second quarter to send the Builders into halftime with a 17-10 lead.
Both the offense and defense turned it up in the second half.
Former Arkansas City standout Tanner Spencer capped an 11-play drive with a 3-yard touchdown run to open the second half.
Facing third-and-6, Denson pass attempt to Antoise Fields was intercepted by Southwestern junior Travon Crockett, and the Builders cashed in the turnover with a 36-yard touchdown run by sophomore David Roper.
The Swedes opened the fourth quarter by driving to the Southwestern 12-yard line. But the defense came up big again, stopping Bethany on fourth-and-8. The Builders again stopped Bethany on fourth down, this time near midfield on fourth-and-6, and Botello booted a 45-yard field goal to cap the scoring.
Bethany’s final drive ended when junior Marcus Richard intercepted Denson in the end zone. Denson finished 12-of-27 passing for 213 yards.
The Builders return home at 1 p.m. Saturday to face No. 25-ranked Bethel. The Threshers (4-0, 4-0) defeated Sterling 31-26 on last Saturday.
