Lady Cardinals advance

SOUTH HAVEN — South Haven High School seniors Brittney Byers and Rachel Turek combined for 26 points Tuesday night, leading the third-seeded Lady Cardinals to a 40-21 victory against sixth-seeded Oxford in the quarterfinals of the Class 1A Regional Tournament.

The Lady Cardinals (16-5) advanced to the semifinals at 7 p.m. Friday against the winner between seventh-seeded Central of Burden or No. 2 Argonia. Those two were slated to play Tuesday in Argonia.

Friday’s semifinals and Saturday’s championship game are in Burden.

Byers scored eight of her game-high 14 points in the first quarter as South Haven opened on an 8-1 run.

Shut out in the first quarter, Turek erupted for 12 points the rest of the way.

South Haven held the Lady Wildcats (4-15) to a Lauren Payne free throw in the first quarter and led 19-4 at halftime.

Freshman Kamdyn Butler added seven points for the Lady Cardinals, who were 13 of 27 from the foul line.

Freshman Liberty Kies finished with five points to lead the young Lady Wildcats, who have no seniors on the roster. Oxford was 3 of 7 from the line.
