The No. 19-ranked Cowley College wrestling team came back from an early deficit Wednesday to earn a convincing 42-9 win against Labette in its second and final home dual of the season at W.S. Scott Auditorium.
The Tigers trailed 9-6 after the first four matches before winning their final seven weight classes.
“We fell behind in a couple matches, but stuck to our game plan and did a really good job against a dangerous team,” Cowley coach Beau Vest said. “I thought the guys wrestled really smart and it was a team effort.”
With his team trailing 9-6, Cowley sophomore Blake Hickerson found himself behind 4-1 against Vernell Hawkins before rallying for a 13-5 victory at 157 pounds.
“Hickerson’s a hard worker that keeps himself in matches and figures out a way to get points on the board late,” Vest said.
Sophomore Garrett Lange followed with a 4-2 decision against Caleb Wise.
Tyler Bingham and Jesse Nunez recorded pins, and Ottis Peeler won via technical fall before former Arkansas City High School standout Tyler Shannon won 4-0 at heavyweight.
“Our middle weights put us in position to win and the upper weights really slammed the door,” Vest said. “Garrett went out and wrestled smart and has a lot of weapons that he is not even showing yet.”
The Tigers compete at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Neosho County.
