WICHITA — How bad did the Winfield High School girls tennis doubles team of seniors Elena Woodburn and Ayden Law want the fifth-place medals Saturday at the Class 4A Regional Championships at Wichita Collegiate High School?
The ninth-seeded Lady Vikings duo already had punched their ticket to the Big Show by gritting out an emotional 6-1, 7-6 (7-5) upset against the fifth-seeded Wichita Trinity tandem of Keaton Klaassen and Darcy Dunne in an elimination match to clinch a berth in the KSHSAA Class 4A State Championships this Friday and Saturday on their home courts at the T.H. Vaughan Tennis Center.
That wasn’t enough.
Woodburn and Law took it one step farther, gutting out an even tougher 7-6 (7-5), 3-6, 7-6 (7-2) marathon to upset sixth-seeded Abigale Bilson and Haley Clements of Towanda-Circle for the fifth-place medals.
The Winfield duo began their day of upsets by knocking off eighth-seeded Ashlyn Bowen and Taylor Curry of Augusta. That set them up for a showdown against the top-seeded Wellington duo of Kylie Aufdengarten and Rylee Rusk, the Class 4A State runners-up a year ago. The Wellington team rolled into the finals with a 6-0, 6-0 victory, knocking Woodburn and Law down to the elimination bracket.
Four-time defending 4A State champion Collegiate cruised to the team title with 21 points. Towanda-Circle (11) edged Wellington (10) for second, while Trinity (8) edged the Lady Vikings (7) for fourth.
The top six placers in singles and doubles advanced to State.
“Everyone fought very hard today and I am proud of their effort,” WHS coach Lexis Hibbs said.
Aufdengarten and Rusk were upset for the doubles title by the second-seeded Collegiate team of Sallie Lair and Lily Conrad.
Winfield junior Eliza Camp also qualified for the Big Show, sending three Lady Vikings to the State meet on their home courts.
Camp held the No. 6 seed in singles play and rolled to a 6-0, 6-0 victory against 11th seed Izabella Barker of Pratt. But Camp was tripped up in a 6-0, 6-1 loss to third-seeded Emma Mantovani of Collegiate, dropping down tot he elimination match.
Needing one victory to advance to State, Camp cruised past seventh-seeded Erin Jackson 6-0, 6-0 to punch her ticket, then gutted out a 6-1, 7-6 (7-2) triumph against fifth-seeded Lanna Chase of Circle for the fifth-place medal.
Circle’s Annabelle Adams, the third-place finisher at State a year ago, rolled to a 6-0, 6-0 victory against second-seeded Isabella Sebits of Trinity for the singles title.
Winfield’s No. 2 doubles team of junior Mike Karr and sophomore Taylor Byo came awfully close to playing Woodburn and Law for fifth. However, they fell 6-1, 6-3 to Bilson and Clements in the elimination match and were eliminated.
The No. 7 seed, Karr and Byo rolled past 10th-seeded Jennifer Johnson and Leonela Martinez of Ulysses in the first round, but had to face Lair and Conrad in the quarterfinals, falling 6-1, 6-2.
Winfield sophomore MaKenna Roark had the No. 16 seed in singles and had the arduous task of facing Adams in the first round. Roark fell 6-0, 6-1 to end her season.
