Lady Builders pull away at Saint Mary

Southwestern College junior forward Sydney Webb scored a career-high 19 points on 6-of-9 shooting from the floor Wednesday night.

LEAVENWORTH — The Southwestern College women’s basketball team was victorious on the road Wednesday night, defeating Saint Mary 62-53 in KCAC action.

Defense was the story as each team held the opponent to exactly 30-percent shooting from the floor.

The Lady Builders (8-7, 5-6 KCAC) used four straight 3-pointers to jump out to a quick 12-2 lead. That made up half the team’s total from downtown on the night as they finished just 8 of 28 overall.

Southwestern held onto a 19-11 lead after the first 10 minutes by hitting 5 of 9 from behind the arc.

Southwestern extended the lead to 12, 33-21, at halftime.

The Lady Builders shot just 5 of 17 from the field in the second quarter, but the defense stepped up by holding Saint Mary to just 10 points on 4-of-15 shooting.

Southwestern outrebounded the Lady Spires (2-13, 2-9) 53-41.

The Lady Builders fended off a couple of potential Saint Mary rallies in the second half to hold their cushion. Their lead grew to as high as 17 in the fourth quarter, but Saint Mary capped a 13-2 run to cut it to six with about five minutes remaining.

Junior Sydney Webb led the Lady Builders with a career-best 19 points on 6-of-9 shooting. Senior Marissa Evans also cracked double figures with 11 pointsand eight rebounds.

The Lady Builders return home at 5 p.m. Saturday to face arch rival Friends (9-8, 6-5).
