Volleyball season got under way Tuesday with varying results.

The Arkansas City Lady Bulldogs were host to a triangular, dropping matches to Goddard-Eisenhower and Cheney.

The Winfield Lady Vikings dropped a pair of matches against Towanda-Circle and McPherson in a triangular at McPherson.

Ark City dropped a 25-21, 23-25, 25-17 battle against Goddard-Eisenhower, and was swept by Cheney 25-23, 25-19.

“For our opener of the season, the girls played really well,” ACHS coach Lacy Colquhoun said. 

“Although we did lose both matches, there were so many good things happening as well. We have a great group of leaders and the chemistry of the team this year is awesome. They are a fun group to work with and we are excited about this season.”

Senior Taryn Rich pounded 11 kills against the Lady Lions. Senior Maggie Musson dished out 14 assists and 10 digs, and was 17-of-17 serving.

Rich added five kills and Musson had four kills in the loss to the Lady Cardinals. Senior Lauren Camp pulled up 11 digs, juniors Hadley Colquhoun and Haley Trent recorded seven digs each, and Musson offered nine digs and six assists against Cheney.

“We played and communicated better the second match against Eisenhower,” Colquhoun said. “Taking them to three sets is a big accomplishment in itself. We had some key digs and big blocks that kept us in the game.”

The Lady Vikings opened with a 25-10, 25-11 loss to Towanda-Circle and fell to the host Lady Bullpups 25-15, 25-12.

Junior Kylar Graham recorded four kills, three in the match against McPherson. Senior Emmah Sultz dished out seven assists, four against the Lady ‘Pups, while senior Sydney Russell recorded 10 digs, six in the loss to Cheney.

The Lady Vikings have their home tourney at 9 a.m. Saturday. Ark City, Ark City Christian Academy, Augusta, Buhler, Chanute, Conway Springs, El Dorado, Mulvane, Wellington and Wichita Trinity are scheduled for the Winfield Early Bird Tournament at Ollie Thomas Gymnasium.


South Central Border League teams opened the season in nonleague action Tuesday.

The Udall Lady Eagles compiled a 2-1 record at a Fairfield quad in Langdon.

The Lady Eagles lost to Little River 25-9, 25-8, but won their final two matches. Udall topped Ark City Christian 25-19, 25-8 and defeated the host Lady Falcons 28-26, 25-22.

Central of Burden opened play at a triangular in Leon. The Lady Raiders were swept, falling to host Leon-Bluestem 25-14, 25-15 and Berean Academy 25-15, 25-19.

The South Haven Lady Cardinals took part in a quad in Attica, dropping all three matches.

The Lady Cardinals won their first set of the season, but couldn’t sustain the momentum in a 22-25, 25-10, 25-19 loss to Pretty Prairie. South Haven fell to the host Lady Bulldogs 25-19, 25-17 and ended the night with a 25-22, 25-18 setback to Argonia.
