Before play was suspended, the Cowley College softball team opened Jayhawk Conference play last Thursday with a doubleheader sweep of Cloud County at Lady Tigers Field.

Cowley took the opener 9-6 and won the nightcap 14-13 in eight innings.

The Lady Tigers (11-11, 2-0 Jayhawk East) ran their winning streak to five in a row.

Cowley scored four runs in the bottom of the first inning of the opener and never trailed. Both teams finished with 11 hits, but the Lady Thunderbirds (5-6, 0-2) stranded 11 baserunners.

Christian Wind, Brooke Mason and Micah North all homered and combined to drive in eight runs for Cowley.

Ashlynn Mercer (6-6) went the distance in the circle, holding Cloud County to six runs despite allowing 12 hits and nine walks.

Mattison Hogrefe (3-3) took the loss for the Lady T-birds, allowing 10 hits and eight runs in going the distance.

The Lady Tigers couldn’t hold onto a 9-2 lead in the nightcap.

Cloud County scratched across a run in the top of the fourth and tied the game with a six-run sixth.

A crazy seventh inning saw both teams scored three runs each sent the game into extra innings.

The Lady T-birds took a 13-12 lead with a run in the top of the eighth. However, Cowley answered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the eighth to win in walk-off fashion.

Brooke Mason started in the circle for the Lady Tigers and allowed nine runs in 5 2/3 innings. Only four of the runs she allowed were earned due to six Cowley errors.

Mercer (7-6) pitched the final two innings of relief to earn the win, while helping her cause at the plate by going 2 for 2 with an RBI.

Elizabeth Luttrell homered and drove in three, and Alivia Lange tripled and finished with three RBI.
