Three post-halftime goals propel Vikes

Winfield High School freshman Zach Hammar pulls away from El Dorado defenders Jett Roberts, left, and Kaleb Ash (10) to score on a breakaway 6 1/2 minutes into the second half Tuesday afternoon at Richard L. Jantz Stadium.

It was a nice homecoming of sorts for the Winfield High School boys soccer team Tuesday afternoon against El Dorado on the pitch at Richard L. Jantz Stadium.

The Vikings snapped a scoreless game with three second-half goals to defeat the Wildcats 3-0 in AV-CTL Division III action.

“Always nice to get a victory; however, I didn’t feel that we played with the urgency and excitement that we preach,” WHS coach Charles Osen said.

“I do think El Dorado came in and played much harder than we did, so credit to them. We had some good scoring chances in the first half, but didn’t finish. At halftime we stressed that we have to play hard and smart for the next 40 minutes and we did a much better job at that.”

Freshman Zach Hammar snapped the deadlock by taking a breakaway and booting home a shot from 10 yards out 6 1/2 minutes into the second half.

That seemed to give the Vikings (3-3, 1-0 AV-CTL D-III) a shot of adrenaline.

Hammar fed senior Ty Biby in the 63rd minute to make it 2-0, and sophomore Kyan Towles added an insurance goal 15 minutes later on a breakaway.

“It felt like some relief for our team when Zach hit our first goal,” Osen said. “The guys stepped on the gas better after that. Zach has an amazing knack of really placing his shots and that was a nice one as he worked it from the left side into the net.”

Senior Victor Peroo had plenty of help from his defense in stopping two shots to record the shutout in goal for Winfield. Ryan Hus recorded nine saves in goal for El Dorado.

The Wildcats (0-6, 0-1), who were outshot 16-6, have been outscored 45-0 this season.

“Our back line of defense played a good game,” Osen said. “They will need to keep that momentum going into a very difficult challenge on Thursday with Andover Central coming in.”
