Arkansas City tops Winfield for second game this season

Arkansas City High School senior Taylor Kilpatrick drives the paint with Winfield junior Jacob George hot on his heels in the first quarter Tuesday night at Cowley Clash II in The Dawg Pound.

An exciting back-and-forth game before a solid crowd for a Tuesday night threatened to turn into a runaway, but the Arkansas City High School boys basketball team didn’t pull away until late for a 67-49 victory against arch rival Winfield at Cowley Clash II in The Dawg Pound.

The first nine minutes of action saw six ties and six lead changes before the host Bulldogs (8-7) used a 17-3 run to build a 12-point lead.

ACHS senior Dax Givens sparked the run with a 3-pointer from the right wing 49 seconds into the second quarter.

Winfield junior Jacob George quelled the run with a 3-pointer from the left corner with 1:52 left in the first half and the Vikings (2-13) built that into a 7-0 run to end the half trailing just 29-24.

The game might have been closer to that point, but 13 Winfield turnovers were cashed in to the tune of a 14-5 advantage in points off turnovers for the Bulldogs, who shot just 40 percent (8 of 20) from the floor compared to 46.2 percent (6 of 13) for the Vikings.

Winfield continued the surge out of the break.

George buried another 3-pointer from the left corner and Reese Venable drove the baseline for a layup 59 seconds in to complete the 12-point comeback and knot the score 29-29.

Undeterred, the Bulldogs scored the next 13 points to take their biggest lead of the game at that point. Ark City shot 5 of 7 from inside the arc in the period.

Again, the Vikings stormed back.

Riley Yingling grabbed a steal and fed Aidan Harper for a layup at the buzzer to complete an 8-0 Winfield run and cut the deficit to five, 42-37, entering the final quarter.

This time the Vikings had no answer.

Senior Jamauri Jordan, who came off the bench with a team-high 16 points for the Bulldogs, scored on a layup before bullying his way through the paint to cap a 7-0 Ark City run.

Harper ended that run with a turnaround jumper in the paint, but Brock Merz grabbed a rebound and sent an outlet pass to Givens for a fast-break layup and the Bulldogs led 55-41.

George found the left corner for another 3-pointer, but Ark City scored the next six points to pull away for good.

The Bulldogs sank 4 of 4 from the foul line down the stretch and 24 of 30 in the game.

Givens finished with 12 points, while Merz added 10 points and a team-high six rebounds off the bench for the Bulldogs, who outscored Winfield 31-12 from the pine. Cadon Clark chipped in nine points and Doug Stewart added seven points, three assists and two steals. Ark City finished 54.1-percent shooting (20 of 37) from the floor and outrebounded Winfield 27-19.

Harper led all scorers with 17 points for the Vikings, who finished 13 of 18 from the line. George went 4 of 9 from beyond the arc in a 16-point outing, but Winfield finished just 39.5 percent (15 of 38) from the floor.

Ark City defeated the Vikings 78-47 on Dec. 6 in Cowley Clash I in Winfield.
