IOLA — Cowley College sophomore Elluan Martins Gomes scored four goals Wednesday to lead the men’s soccer team to a dominating 7-1 victory at Allen to open conference play.
The Tigers (4-0, 1-0 Jayhawk East) needed only three minutes to take the lead on a goal by freshman Lucas Mauro. Gomes scored his first with 15 minutes left before halftime.
The Red Devils (3-1, 0-1) scored one minute into the second half to pull to within 2-1, but Cowley responded with five unanswered goals.
Gomes scored three second-half goals to record his second hat trick in four contests.
“When we are focused we can be very dangerous,” Cowley coach Ruy Vaz said. “Elluan is a force of nature. His physicality stands out when we need it.”
Cowley’s other second-half goals came from Andre Cavichione and Lucas De Freitas, who came off the bench to score his third goal in four games.
“We are so deep that our level of play never changed even after playing every player on the roster but our backup goalkeeper,” Vaz said. “It was extremely important for us to start conference play with a victory on the road. It sends a message to everyone that we can be dangerous and are focused on our goal.”
The Tigers play at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at Kansas City (1-1-1).
“This break comes at a perfect time for us to be able to fix some mistakes, get some guys healthy and prepare for Kansas City,” Vaz said.
