Wood to make fourth trip to State

Arkansas City High School senior Bella Wood hits out of the rough onto the green Monday afternoon at the Class 5A Regional Championships at Rolling Hills Country Club in Wichita. Wood qualified for the State meet for the fourth consecutive year.

WICHITA — Arkansas City High School senior Bella Wood will cap her high school golf career with a fourth consecutive appearance at the Big Show.

Wood fired an 89 to tie for 10th place Monday afternoon at the Class 5A Regional Championships at Rolling Hills Country Club.

More important, Wood secured one of six individual berths for the two-day KSHSAA Class 5A State Championships next Monday and Tuesday at Salina Municipal Golf Course.

KSHSAA rules changed slightly this season due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The top three teams qualified for State as full squads, and the top six individuals from non-qualifying teams also punched their ticket to the Show.

Kapaun Mt. Carmel swept the Regional titles, carding a 344 to take the team title by 21 strokes ahead of runner-up Hays. Maize also qualified for State with a third-place finish.

Alexa Garrett fired a 6-over 79 to win the individual title by three strokes over teammate Abby Wolff.

Ark City sophomore Breanna Ruyle missed qualifying for State by two spots with a 97, finishing in a tie for 19th.

Ashleigh Mauler of Bishop Carroll (94) missed the cut when teammate Bella Jones carded a 91 to take the final individual berth.

Wood had to settle for a double-bogey on the No. 1 hole, but followed with a birdie on the 5-par No. 2. She struggled to a 4-over 8 on No. 3 before settling down with par on three straight holes, shooting an 8-over 44 at the turn.

Her second birdie of the day opened play on the back nine, but back-to-back bogeys to end the day left her with an 8-over 45 on the backside.

ACHS sophomore Kamryn Mendoza tied for 43rd with a 120. Sophomore Tayeah Rich was 46th with a 126 and sophomore Aidyn Holman tied for 48th with a 130.

Wood finished ninth at 5A Regionals a year ago and tied for 21st at the State meet. She placed 15th at 5A Regionals in her sophomore campaign, placing 44th at State.

When the Lady Bulldogs qualified for the 4A State meet as an entire team during her freshman year, Wood finished eighth at Regionals and 49th at State.
