McPHERSON — The Southwestern College men’s basketball dropped its fourth game in a row Saturday, falling 83-76 at McPherson in KCAC action.

It was another slow start offensively for the Moundbuilders (4-4, 0-4 KCAC), posting just 26 first-half points as they struggled to hit shots and take care of the ball.

Fortunately for Southwestern, defense kept the Builders in the game and they faced just a six-point deficit at the break despite going the first six minutes with just four points.

Each team’s offense turned it up a notch in the second half as the Bulldogs (5-3, 2-2) began as the aggressor, getting to the foul line at will.

The Bulldogs converted 27 of 40 from the line while Southwestern was just 8 of 17. The Builders outshot McPherson overall and from the 3-point line, but free points at the stripe were too much of a disparity to overcome. The Moundbuilders also committed nine more turnovers.

Enduring two 11-point deficits, the Moundbuilders stormed back to pull to within one with eight minutes remaining and eventually took the lead 61-60 two minutes later. That was the only lead they saw, however.

The Builders put together a small run with under a minute to go, cutting it to two on a basket by senior Andrew Hamm, but the Bulldogs continued to get to the line without turning the ball over and connected on most of their attempts down the stretch to ice the game.

Hamm finished with a team-high 23 points on 9-of-16 shooting for Southwestern. Junior Troy Baker finished with 15 rebounds, eight of which came off the offensive glass. He also added nine points and a block.

The Builders play at 8 p.m. today at Sterling. The Warriors (2-7, 0-4) lost to Saint Mary 92-86 on Saturday.
