DERBY — The high-octane Derby High School softball team flexed its muscle in the first game of Thursday’s nonleague doubleheader against Arkansas City.
After a 12-2 run-rule victory in the opener, the Class 6A Lady Panthers needed all of that muscle to hold off the Lady Bulldogs 10-7 in the nightcap.
Derby pounded out 15 hits, including six doubles, while holding the Lady Bulldogs (10-8) to four hits in the opener.
The Lady Panthers (16-2) jumped on Game 1 starter Menley Westhoff for five runs in the bottom of the first inning and led 9-2 after three. Westhoff was charged with nine runs, seven earned, on nine hits and four walks, with five strikeouts before giving way to Lauren Camp, who allowed three runs, two earned, on six hits in three innings of work.
The game ended after six due to the run rule, though center fielder Kirsten Birdwell hooked up with third baseman Erin Hull on a double play when a runner tried to tag up on a fly ball.
Westhoff went 1 for 2 with a triple and a walk, scoring twice.
Espy Daniels added a double, but Birdwell and Maggie Musson had the only other hits for the Lady Bulldogs, who committed three errors.
Ark City played error-free ball in the nightcap.
The Lady Bulldogs, held leads of 3-0 and 6-3, but couldn’t hold on.
Kelsey Daniel powered the offense with a double and a three-run home run that briefly snapped a 3-3 tie.
Daniels and Musson added two hits apiece, while Hull drove in two.
Hadley Colquhoun went the distance in the circle, giving up 10 earned runs on 15 hits and two walks, with one strikeouts.
The Lady Bulldogs (5-5 AV-CTL D-II) were slated to play a makeup twinbill Friday at Goddard-Eisenhower to wrap up the regular season. The Lady Tigers (13-5, 8-2) need a sweep to claim a share of the AV-CTL D-II title with idle Maize South (16-4, 10-2).
Ark City opens the Class 5A Regional playoffs with the No. 7 seed and a 3 p.m. Monday semifinal game against No. 10 St. Thomas Aquinas (10-10) at Blue Valley Southwest High School in Overland Park. The winner meets the winner between the host and second-seeded Lady Timberwolves (16-4) and No. 15 Kansas City-Turner (3-15) at 6 p.m. for the Region 2 championship.
