Vikings third  in league meet

CTL D-III Championships in El Dorado.

EL DORADO — The Winfield High School boys cross country team placed two runners in the top five Thursday afternoon at the AV-CTL D-III Championships at Wartick Farm.

Just three points separated the top three teams in the league meet. The Vikings finished third with 58 points. Buhler (56) took the league title from runner-up Towanda-Circle (56) due to a tiebreaker.

The Lady Vikings didn’t field a complete team, but placed two runners in the top 12.

Junior Craig LaBrue led the Vikings to a third-place finish, completing the 5K race in 16 minutes, 53.9 seconds. Junior Camilo Tarin was close behind, placing fifth in 17:26.9.

Tanner Lindahl of Buhler took the league title in 16:21.7, less than 18 seconds better than runner-up Sawyer Schmidt of Augusta (16:39.1).

WHS senior Peter Stout just missed the top 10, placing 11th in 17:44.3. Freshman Corban Priest was 15th in 17:56.3.

Other Winfield runners were freshman Andru Jones (24th), junior Joey Bowlby (34th) and freshman Mark Thompson (35th).

Freshman Kayli Myers led the Lady Vikings, placing ninth in the 5K race in 21:21.2. Freshman Gracelynn Benavides finished 12th in 22:13.3, junior Sophia Sisk was 25th and junior Kate Stanton was 27th.

Sophomore David Koller was the lone Winfield runner in either junior varsity race, placing 18th in the boys 5K run in 23:02.9.

The Class 4A Regional Championships are set for Oct. 26 at Bluestem Point at El Dorado Lake. The girls race begins at 10 a.m., and the boys start at 10:40 a.m.

The Vikings compete against Augusta, El Dorado, Mulvane, Rose Hill, Topeka-Hayden, Towanda-Circle, Wamego and Wellington.

The Circle boys were the Class 4A State runner-up last year, finishing second to Buhler. El Dorado was fourth, Wamego sixth and Augusta eighth.

Buhler’s girls team was 4A State runner-up behind Baldwin. Circle finished eighth, Wamego ninth and Augusta 11th.
