GODDARD — The first game of Friday’s AV-CTL D-II doubleheader couldn’t have went much better for the Arkansas City High School baseball team.

The nightcap couldn’t have went much worse.

In what may be a prelude to the Class 5A Regional title game, the Bulldogs banged out 11 hits, four for extra bases, to win the opener 12-5. However, Ark City was shut out on three hits in the nightcap.

Ark City jumped out early with a three-run first inning on no hits in Game 1, but gave it right back in the bottom half of the inning.

The Bulldogs (11-8, 7-5 AV-CTL D-II) went ahead to stay while chasing Eisenhower starter Owen Reynolds in a five-run third. Reynolds was charged with eight runs, six earned, despite giving up just one hit in 2 1/3 innings. He issued eight walks while striking out three, and threw four wild pitches.

Haden O’Toole had an RBI double in the five-run inning, and Lucas Barnes greeted reliever Eric Reeder with a two-run single. Halen David also singled home a run.

Ark City starter Garrett VanDeventer went two innings, giving up three earned runs on two hits and a walk, with one strikeout.

David (1-0) earned the victory in relief, giving up one earned run on five hits, with four walks and two strikeouts. Owen Bucher nailed down his first save, allowing one earned run on three hits, with two strikeouts and no walks through the final 2 2/3 innings.

Barnes was a perfect 3 for 3 with a walk and drove in three. O’Toole finished 3 for 4 with three doubles, a walk, three runs and two RBI. David added two hits and a walk, scoring twice.

Mattingly Milledge went the distance in the nightcap for the Tigers (13-7, 6-6).

Wade Reynolds stroked a two-run, walk-off double off of reliever Gavin Rains in the bottom of the sixth inning to end the game due to the run rule.

ACHS starter Ike Abrams went 4 1/3 innings, giving up five runs, two earned, on seven hits and two walks.

Bucher singled in the first and fourth innings, and O’Toole had a one-out single in the fifth for Ark City’s only hits. The Bulldogs stranded the bases loaded in the fourth, and left two on in the sixth.

The Bulldogs, the reigning Class 4A State champions, are the fifth seed and open the Class 5A Regional Tournament at 2 p.m. against No. 12-seeded Salina Central at Goddard District Stadium.

Fourth-seeded Eisenhower meets No. 13 Kapaun Mt. Carmel at 3:30 p.m., with the winners playing at 5 p.m. for the Regional title.
