Lady Tigers lose first

Cowley College freshman guard Kalyne Daniels, right, ties up Pratt forward Eva Sanchez for a jump ball in the first quarter Wednesday at W.S. Scott Auditorium.

After opening the season with 12 straight victories, the Cowley College women’s basketball team suffered its first defeat Wednesday in a 70-62 home loss to Pratt at W.S. Scott Auditorium.

The Lady Tigers (12-1, 2-1 Jayhawk East) led for only 16 seconds of the game, when Seanna Boltz hit a 3-pointer for a 9-7 lead.

However, Jordan Mathis answered with a 3-pointer for the Lady Beavers (8-3, 2-0) on their next possession and Pratt led 22-17 after one quarter of play.

A layup by freshman Anna Aoyama at the halftime buzzer pulled Cowley to within 36-34.

The Lady Tigers did not carry that momentum into the second half as Pratt scored 16 of the first 17 third-quarter points and led by as many as 20, 57-37, before Cowley scored the final seven points of the quarter.

The Lady Tigers cut the deficit to six (59-53) with a 3-pointer by Ayanna Correll with four minutes remaining, but that was as close as they could get.

“They manhandled us and just played tougher than us,” Cowley coach Todd Clark said.

Boltz, the team’s leading scorer at 14.8 points per game, went out with an apparent ankle injury with just more than two minutes left in the first half and did not return.

“That obviously hurt us, but we have still got to step up and play,” Clark said.

Kalyne Daniels led Cowley with 14 points, while Shontrice Austin (12) and Milena Fromming (10) also scored in double figures for the Lady Tigers.

Mathis led three Pratt players in double figures with 15 points and 10 rebounds.

The Lady Tigers play at 2 p.m. Saturday at Garden City (5-6, 0-2 Jayhawk West).

“They are very athletic, so it will be a tough road matchup for us,” Clark said.
