Cook wins 1A boys pole vault in record-setting fashion

WICHITA --UPDATE: Thunderstorms are rolling into the Wichita Metro area, and officials have decided to suspend the KSHSAA All-Classes State Track & Field Championships.

The meet is schedule to resume with field events at 10 a.m. Sunday, and running events at 11 a.m.

Winfield High School grad Matthew Everett rolled to the State title in the 4A boys discus, completing a 183-feet, 9-inch throw Saturday afternoon.

Everett's throw was nearly 13 feet farther than runner-up Lemoses White of Kansas City-Piper (170-10).

Recent Udall High School grad Joshua Fielder made it two gold medals Saturday at the KSHSAA All-Classes State Track & Field Championships at Cessna Stadium.

Fielder, who earlier in the day captured the State title in the 1A boys triple jump, added the 1A 400-meter run to his laurels, winning that race in 49.83 seconds. Ivan Valera of Northern Valley was second in 50.44 seconds.

Fielder cleared 44 feet, 7 1/2 inches to win the triple jump title by almost a foot. Runner-up Thomas Atkins of Hanover cleared 43-9 1/4.

Central of Burden junior Chance Cook won the 1A boys pole vault early Saturday.

Cook did t in style, too, setting a school record by clearing 15 feet -- 1 1/2 feet higher than runner-up Nicholas Stutsman of Northern Valley (13-6). The former school record of 14-4 had stood since 1967.

Recent Arkansas City High School grad AJ Wilson, who just signed a National Letter of Intent to compete in track and field at Cowley College, was the runner-up in the 5A boys 400 in 50.17 seconds. The reigning 4A State champion in the event, Wilson was second to Elijah Moseley of Wichita Heights, who took the State title in 48.29 seconds.
