Arkansas City High School’s No. 1 doubles team of Jacey Arnett and Ellie Messenger will take a 23-3 record into the Class 5A Regional Championships this Saturday.
Like Monday’s Ark Valley-Chisholm Trail League Division II Championships, they’ll have home-court advantage.
Arnett and Messenger dropped just one game Monday in the league meet at the Louderback Family Tennis Center, storming to the doubles titles by winning 24 consecutive games.
The Lady Bulldogs finished third with 25 points, three behind runner-up 28. Andover, which had the top two singles finalists, easily won the team title with 49 points.
Arnett and Messenger played shutout tennis in the title match, a 6-0, 6-0 victory against Sydney Benjamin and Hannah Weers of Andover.
The Ark City duo took the No. 1 seed and a first-round bye into the tourney, and had perhaps their toughest match in the second round, a 6-1, 6-0 triumph against the Andover Central tandem of Jazzmyn Williams and Grace Schaefer.
To reach the title match, Arnett and Messenger had to go through teammates Landry Biddle and Taylor Nulik, and showed no mercy, rolling to a 6-0, 6-0 win.
Biddle and Nulik opened with a 6-0, 6-3 victory against Gabrielle Dextradeur and Kiersten Kreuzburg-Dunken of Goddard, and dropped just one game in an easy 6-1, 6-0 quarterfinal upset of fourth-seeded Eris Bishop and Maddelyn Hamm of Valley Center.
The No. 5 seed entering the tourney, Biddle and Nulik settled for fourth place after a tough 3-6, 6-4 (12-10) loss to the third-seeded Andover duo of Aurelia Tan and Annabelle Tantemsomboon.
Ark City’s singles players had to play each other for 13th place after opening with back-to-back losses. No. 11 seed Jolee Wells defeated 12th seeded Justise Mills 9-2 in the head-to-head battle.
The Regional meet is set for a 10 a.m. start Saturday. Defending KSHSAA Class 5A State champion Bishop Carroll joins Andover Central, Goddard, Goddard-Eisenhower, Kapaun Mt. Carmel, Maize South and Wichita-Northwest in the Regional. The top six singles and doubles placers qualify for the KSHSAA Class 5A State Championships, set for Oct. 18-19 at Pittsburg High School.
