Vikings swept by Clearwater to put a slight damper on Homecoming

Winfield High School sophomore Ar’mon Acosta is fouled by Clearwater defender Trace Tjaden with 1:44 remaining in the first half Friday night in Ollie Thomas Gymnasium. Acosta made the basket, then converted the and-1.

Struggles continued for the Winfield High School basketball teams, who ventured into nonleague action Friday night against Clearwater on Homecoming night.

The Vikings fell 70-57 to Clearwater in the boys game.

The Vikings (2-12) trailed only 35-28 at halftime, but Clearwater slowly pulled away.

Aidan Harper finished with a game-high 19 points, going 6 of 6 from the foul line, while Jacob George buried three baskets from 3-point range in an 18-point effort for the Vikings, who were a solid 11 of 13 from the foul line.

Drake Beatty had 15 points and Trace Tjaden scored 11 for the Indians, who were 9 of 16 from the line.

Winfield lost to the Indians 62-31 on Dec. 13 in Clearwater.

The Winfield girls dropped the matinee to Clearwater 49-35.

The Lady Vikings (5-9) managed a lone Aleigha Gale basket in being outscored 13-2 in the first quarter. Winfield trailed 26-13 at halftime.

The third quarter was no better for the Lady Vikings, who were held without a field goal, settling for 4 of 4 from the foul line. Winfield sank just 1 of 8 from the line in the rest of the game combined.

Emma Schumacher came off the bench with one of the best games of her career, burying four baskets from 3-point range while sharing game-high honors with 12 points.

Nine other Lady Vikings scored points, but nobody tallied more than four.

Carli Carson hit a pair of first-half 3-pointers as part of a 12-point effort for the Lady Indians, who were 16 of 22 from the line. Bella Willis added 10 points on 8-of-8 shooting from the line.

The Lady Indians defeated Winfield 60-45 on Dec. 13 in Clearwater.
