Cowley College sophomores Samuel Giles and Iva Halacheva have been recognized for their hard work by being named Cowley College October Athletes of the Month.

Giles, the Male Athlete of the Month, was the top men’s sophomore for the cross country squad at the season-opening Terry Masterson Invitational in Hutchinson.

His performance helped the Tigers to place second as a team and has Cowley ranked second in the latest NJCAA rankings.

The business administration major has a 3.62 GPA.

Halacheva, the Female Athlete of the Month, played in 109 sets for the volleyball team and recorded 475 kills, a .350 hitting percentage, 99 digs, 26 blocks and 46 aces.

She was named a NJCAA first-team All-American, first-team All-District and KJCCC first-team All-Conference, was a KJCCC Offensive Player of the Week three times, named to the Triton Invitational Tournament All-Tournament team, and to the Lady Tiger Invitational All-Tournament team.

She recorded the seventh-most kills in a season in Cowley history (475) and recorded the 10th best hitting percentage in a season in school history (.350).

The sports management major has a 3.3 GPA.
