GODDARD — Arkansas City High School junior Menley Westhoff outdueled Goddard-Eisenhower sophomore Allyson Montgomery in the nightcap of Friday’s AV-CTL D-II doubleheader.
The Lady Bulldogs dropped the opener 7-5, but bounced back with a 4-1 victory in Game 2.
Westhoff scattered six hits and two walks, with eight strikeouts to outduel Montgomery, who went the distance in the circle with a four-hitter, walking two and striking out two.
Westhoff led off the game with a double and came all the way around to score when Eisenhower committed an error on a sacrifice bunt by Espy Daniels, giving the Lady Bulldogs (11-9, 6-6 AV-CTL D-II) a 1-0 lead.
Ark City made it 2-0 an inning later when Maggie Musson drew a leadoff walk and made it to third when Erin Hull reached on a bunt single, then scored on Cady Dickey’s sacrifice bunt.
Daniels led off the third inning with a double and Kelsey Daniel followed by launching a 1-0 pitch over the fence in center field for a two-run home run.
The Lady Tigers (14-6, 9-3) spoiled Westhoff’s shutout in the bottom of the sixth inning on singles by Hannah Weber and Jayci Ontiveros.
Alexis Mastin stroked a three-run home run as part of Eisenhower’s five-run second inning in the opener.
Hadley Colquhoun suffered the loss in the circle, giving up seven runs, six earned, on 10 hits, with two strikeouts and no walks.
Lindsay Dexter also went the distance in the opener, scattering five runs, four earned, on 10 hits and two walks, with no strikeouts.
Daniels finished 3 for 4 with two runs, while Daniel had two doubles and drove in three. Musson also had two hits and drove in one.
The Lady Bulldogs were slated to open the Class 5A Regional Tournament on Monday afternoon against St. Thomas Aquinas at Blue Valley Southwest High School in Overland Park.
The winner was to meet the winner between the host Lady Timberwolves and Kansas City-Turner later Monday for the Regional title.
