WICHITA — The Cowley College men’s soccer team will play for the Plains District championship after defeating Hill College 3-1 on Wednesday at the Stryker Sports Complex.

The Tigers (13-1-2), who are seeking their second straight Plains District title, were slated to play Johnson County (11-5-3) on Thursday night in Wichita for the title. Cowley tied the Cavaliers 0-0 on Sept. 14 in Arkansas City, and 1-1 on Oct. 21 in Overland Park.

After a scoreless first half Wednesday, the Rebels (11-5) got on the board first by scoring with 34:23 remaining.

Cowley sophomore Hikaru Tanaka scored on a penalty kick for the equalizer with 17:53 left.

Cowley freshman Lucas Mauro scored with 2:48 remaining for the go-ahead score. Sophomore Lucas Shirakawa added an insurance goal 44 seconds later off an assist from Mauro.

“We played really well against Hill,” Cowley coach Ruy Vaz said. “They had extremely fast players and were dangerous in transition, but we dominated the possessions and hindered their build-up. All players stepped up and did well.”
