No. 5 Bulldogs fall to No. 1 Goddard in AV-CTL D-II finale

Arkansas City High School junior Samuel Dickey cradles Daniel Helmers of Goddard just before recording a pin in their 113-pound bout Thursday night in The Dawg Pound. The Class 5A No. 5-ranked Bulldogs fell to the No. 1-ranked and five-time defending champion Lions.

The dual date that’s most often circled on the wrestling calendar at Arkansas City High School is the annual AV-CTL D-II showdown with Goddard.

The two state powers were unable to compete the past two years due to weather-related cancellations, but finally met Thursday night in The Dawg Pound.

And while the Class 5A No. 5-ranked Bulldogs put up a solid early battle, it was the five-time defending 5A State champion and No. 1-ranked Lions who pulled away for a 39-24 victory.

The teams entered the dual with a combined 17 grapplers ranked in the top six, but five of Goddard’s wrestlers are ranked No. 1 in their respective weight class.

The Lions won all four matches that involved ranked wrestlers on each side, all coming at four of the five heaviest weights, but Ark City did not give up a fall in any of them.

ACHS senior Nicholas Bahm, ranked No. 5 at 170 pounds, dropped a 9-2 decision to No. 3-ranked Nolan Craine.

Senior Gavin Lough, ranked No. 4 at 182, lost 9-1 to top-ranked Trevor Dopps.

Senior Deston Miller, ranked third at 195, narrowly lost a 6-5 decision against No. 1 Kaden Glass, and junior heavyweight Maximus Shannon, ranked third, lost 5-2 to top-ranked Devon Dawson.

Third-ranked junior Samuel Dickey pinned Daniel Helmers at 113 and fourth-ranked junior Kael Pappan needed less than 30 seconds to pin Cole Glasscock at 120.

Sophomore Traven Hutton used a second-period reversal and near-fall to defeat Koley Huneycutt at 126 to give the Bulldogs a 15-6 lead.

The Lions battled back to win the next two bouts, but No. 4-ranked junior Trig Tennant took a 6-3 decision from Logan Davidson at 145.

Ark City didn’t win another match until sophomore Isaac Stevens pinned Garrett Mead at 220.

The Bulldogs now await the Class 5A Regional Championships, set for Feb. 21-22 at Valley Center High School. The 5A Regionals were broken down into just two regions, with 17 teams competing at Valley Center. In addition to No. 1 Goddard, the regional includes No. 2 Maize, No. 4 Great Bend, No. 7 Newton, No. 8 McPherson and No. 10 Kapaun Mt. Carmel.
