Lady Vikings are league runners-up, take home three all-league awards

Winfield High School sophomore Chaney Littell was one of three Lady Vikings to earn all-league honors Tuesday at the AV-CTL D-III & IV Championships at the Wellington Golf Club. Littell fired a 94 to finish  seventh, earning  all-league second-team honors. Elly Bertholf earned first-team status after placing fourth with an 89, and Celine Mendoza joined Littell on the second team by placing 10th with a 99.

WELLINGTON — The Winfield High School girls golf team took home the second-place plaque Monday at the AV-CTL Division III & IV Championships at the Wellington Golf Club.

The Lady Vikings carded a team 382, 11 strokes behind league champion Buhler. Andale also shot a 382, but Winfield took the fifth-score tiebreaker. Savanna Nickum shot a 109 as the fifth score for the Lady Vikings, but Andale’s fifth golfer, Arabella Clevenger carded a 124.

“Our league is extremely tough,” WHS coach Dave Bertholf said. “We have three of the top 4A schools in the state in our league and we take turns beating each other.”

Elly Bertholf fired an 89 to place fourth and earn all-league first-team status. The top six teams make up the all-league first team, with the next six earning second-team honors.

Bertholf struggled with a 47 on the front nine, which left her tied for seventh at the turn. However, after not making par anywhere on the front, she parred five holes on the backside for a 42, which tied for fourth after the turn.

Morgan Brasser of Andale fired a 4-over 74, easily winning the league title by nine strokes. Brasser birdied No. 7 to go with par on five holes, opening a four-stroke lead with a 37 at the turn. She followed that with a birdie on No. 13 and five more pars on the back stretch.

League runner-up Haley Miller of Buhler recorded more birdies — three — but shot par on just four holes for an overall 83, three strokes better than third-place Jaela Albers of Andale, who birdied No. 13.

The only other birdie on the course was No. 3 by Ashtyn Phillips of Towanda-Circle, who finished ninth with a 95.

Winfield’s Chaney Littell and Celine Mendoza both earned second-team all-league.

Littell sat fourth atop the leaderboard with a 45 after nine holes, with par on Nos. 4 and 9. But No. 10 was the last par as she slipped to a 49 after the turn.

Mendoza’s only par was on No. 9, leaving her at 50, but she shaved one stroke off after the turn.

Kenzie Graham narrowly missed all-league status, finishing 13th with a 100. Graham’s only par was on No. 4, but triple-bogeys on Nos. 7 and 8, followed by a quadruple-bogey on No. 9 left her with a 53 at the turn. She had nothing worse than bogeys on the back side, shaving six strokes with a 47.

Nickum finished 23rd with near-even rounds of 55 and 54, with her best hole a par on No. 16.

The Lady Vikings have home-course advantage Oct. 14 at the Class 4A Regional Championships at Quail Ridge Golf Course. Augusta, Mulvane, Topeka-Hayden, Circle, Wellington and Wichita Trinity also are in the Regional.
