The No. 20-ranked Cowley College men’s soccer team scored four goals in the first half Thursday en route to a 5-1 home win against Allen.
Hikaru Tanaka scored off an assist from Linas Ovcinikovis less than four minutes into the game. Saulo Dantas scored off a free kick less than nine minutes later to give the Tigers (7-1-1, 4-1-1 Jayhawk East) a 2-0 lead.
Andre Cavichione and Lucas Mauro added first-half goals to lift Cowley to a 4-0 halftime lead.
“We played well against Allen, especially in the first half,” Cowley coach Ruy Vaz said. “We had the right intensity and were able to find the back of the net quickly with Tanaka. Lucas’ goal was probably one of the best goals I’ve seen in my time as coach and player. Mauro can be a key player for us -- it only depends on him.”
Vincenzo Leone added his first goal of the season early in the second half to make it 5-0.
“Vincenzo is a great guy and works hard for the team,” Vaz said.
The Red Devils (4-5, 1-5) avoided the shutout with a goal by Juan Carlos-Martinez with 12 minutes left.
The Tigers are home at 4 p.m. Saturday against Kansas City (4-4-1, 3-2) before heading to Overland Park to take on Johnson County at 4:30 p.m. Oct. 9.
The Cavaliers (7-4-1, 4-0-1) held Cowley to a scoreless tie on Sept. 14 in Arkansas City.
