HESSTON — The Winfield High School girls golf team, coming off a solid season-opening team title at Emporia, continued to shine Thursday with a second-place finish at the 18-hole Hesston Invitational at the Hesston Golf Club.
The Lady Vikings carded a team 382, just four strokes away from the team title taken by Andale. Buhler was third, 10 strokes behind Winfield.
Five Lady Vikings shot below 100, led by an 89 from Elly Bertholf.
Bertholf sat tied for second atop the leaderboard with a 40 at the turn, but struggled to a 49 on the backside to finish fourth with an 89.
Morgan Brasser of Andale paired rounds of 38 and 36 to fire a 74, nine strokes better than runner-up Faith Hedges of Bishop Carroll (83). Andale’s Jaela Albers was third with an 86.
Chaney Littell cracked the top 10 for Winfield, firing near-even rounds of 48 and 49 to walk away with a 97 and the final individual medal.
Celine Mendoza shot even rounds of 49 to place 13th on a scorecard playoff with a 98, matching teammate Kenzie Graham, who needed four more strokes on the back nine after opening with a 47. Dalin Bartel was 16th with rounds of 52 and 47, one stroke behind her two teammates.
Ciara Adams shot near rounds of 59 and 60 to place 35th.
The Winfield Invitational is set for a 1 p.m. tee time Thursday at Winfield Country Club. Arkansas City, Bishop Carroll, Derby, El Dorado, Maize South, Mulvane, Newton, Towanda-Circle and Wellington are expected.
