GREAT BEND — The Cowley College women’s basketball team built a 15-point fourth-quarter lead Saturday at Barton, then hung on for a 65-63 victory.

The Lady Tigers (12-0, 2-0 Jayhawk East) remained unbeaten. Barton has lost four in a row.

Cowley trailed only once following the opening basket of the game. Freshman Kalyne Daniels scored in the closing seconds of the first quarter to give the Lady Tigers a 23-14 lead. Daniels scored 10 first-quarter points, while fellow freshman Seanna Boltz added 11.

Cowley led by as many as 11, 28-17, before the Lady Cougars (4-6, 0-1 Jayhawk West) pulled to within five, 37-32, at halftime.

The Lady Tigers still led 51-46 heading into the final quarter, but a 9-0 run, capped by a basket from freshman Jayden Marlnee, built the lead to 63-48 with six minutes remaining.

The Lady Cougars clamped down defensively and pulled to within 64-63 with a 3-pointer by Vanessa Oduah with 51 seconds remaining.

Daniels sank 1 of 2 foul shots to increase Cowley’s lead to 65-63 with eight seconds remaining and Barton was unable to get off a final shot as Cowley forced the Lady Cougars into their 30th turnover of the game.

“This was a good road win in a really tough place to get a win,” Cowley coach Todd Clark said. “I would just like us to finish the game better. We did not do a great job with our composure late.”

Boltz went 5 of 11 from 3-point range and led Cowley with 19 points and six steals. Daniels added 17 points and five rebounds, and Shontrice Austin chipped in 11 points.

Richelle Turney led all players with 20 points, while Queen Ulabo finished with 12 points and 15 rebounds for Barton.

The Lady Tigers return home at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday to face Pratt (6-3, 1-0 Jayhawk West.)
