WILMONT, Ky. — The Southwestern College men’s tennis team picked up its second straight win Tuesday, defeating Asbury 4-3.
The Lady Builders lost 6-1.
Doubles play was a closely-fought battle, with the Moundbuilders (7-2) taking two of three to earn the 1-0 lead heading into singles.
The tandem of Ryan Fung and Sheldon Hawthorne squeaked out a 7-6 (4) victory at the top spot, while the No. 2 duo of David Moral-Tebar and Franco Poi earned a 6-3 win.
Southwestern picked up singles wins at Nos. 3, 4 and 6 to secure the match.
Hawthorne won 6-4, 6-2 at No. 4 singles, while Fung again was a part of a close contest at No. 3, winning 6-2, 2-6, 6-2. Benjamin Erdmann was responsible for the other win, at No. 6 singles, taking the first set 7-6 (6) before his opponent retired. Erdmann led 2-1 in the second set at the time.
The Lady Eagles led 1-0 lead after sweeping all three doubles competitions.
Singles play was a lot closer than the final score indicated, though the Lady Builders (4-5) earned just one point overall. Two of the six matches went to a third set, with Emily Burk nearly forcing a tiebreaker before falling 6-3, 7-6 (3). Alexa Powers narrowly lost at No. 4 7-5, 4-6, 10-7.
Catherine Coe was the lone winner for Southwestern, taking a wild one at No. 3 singles. She squeaked out the first set 7-6 (3), dropped the second and won a marathon 16-14 super-tiebreaker.
The Builders rounded out their spring break trip Wednesday against Cumberland.
