Winfield High School junior Craig LaBrue captured the gold medal on a dreary and wet Thursday afternoon at the Winfield Invitational at Veterans Memorial Park.

Running on his home course, LaBrue completed the 5K event in 16 minutes, 43.94 seconds to top the field of 65 runners, nearly two seconds ahead of Wichita Northwest’s Brayden Rohr (16:45.86).

LaBrue’s teammate, junior Camilo Tarin, finished third in 16:56.23.

Taking two of the top three spots helped the Vikings to easily win the team title. Winfield’s 40 points were less than half that of runner-up Andale (83) and arch rival Arkansas City (84).

Although they didn’t have enough runners to field a complete team, the Lady Vikings nearly matched the boys with a pair of top-six finishes.

Freshman Kayli Myers was runner-up in the girls 5K varsity race in 20:17.27, less than a minute behind champion Skye Kroskey of Wichita Northwest (19:43.79), who topped the field of 44.

Winfield freshman Gracelynn Benavides placed sixth in 21:51, while ACHS junior Lydia Nagomi Watanabe was 13th in 22:08.77.

Ark City sophomore Chase Mathews finished seventh in the boys race in 17:29.64.

Three Vikings ran in a pack, with senior Peter Stout 11th (17:53.14), freshman Corban Priest 12th (18:08.84) and fellow frosh Andru Owens 13th (18:20.76).

Ark City senior Darius Stewart placed 15th (18:23.77), two spots ahead of junior teammate Ivan Solis (18:34.39). ACHS junior Wyatt Biddle was 19th (18:38.55).

Central of Burden senior Challen Jimenez, the lone representative for the Raiders, cracked the top 20 (18:43.36).

The top 20 placers in each race earned medals.

Other Bulldogs to compete in the boys varsity race included Manuel Leos (27th) and Braedon Hayes (53rd). Joey Bowlby (51st) also competed for the Vikings.

The Oxford Wildcats were represented by Ryan Nielson (59th) and Dakota Ortiz (63rd).

Other area runners in the girls varsity race included Sophia Sisk (36th) and Kate Stanton (42) of Winfield.

Ark City junior Christopher Arnett took home the individual gold medal in the 5K junior varsity race, finishing in 19:21.52 among the field of 61.

Arnett prevented Emporia from making it a clean sweep to the team title. The Spartans placed 2-6 to win, with the Junior Bulldogs second.

Other ACHS runners included Kale Morgan, Francis Abrams, Daniel Torres and Jacob Arnett, who ran in a pack to place 16-19. Teammate Jacob Pfannenstiel was 51st.

Mark Thompson led the Junior Vikings by placing 14th. Teammate David Koller was 38th.

Central runners included Logan Braun (28th), Curtis Bass (54th) and Shay Pippitt (56th).

Central freshmen Madison Vaughn (23:24.66) and Jacey McIntire (23:50.42) finished second and third, respectively, in the girls 5K JC race. That helped the Junior Lady Raiders to a second-place team medal.

Other Central runners were Amiya Dieguez (33rd), Cera Krueger (39th), Alysha Stevens (41st) and Jackilynn Krueger (42nd).

Gwenth Abrams and Gabriella Herrera were 16th and 17th for Ark City, while teammate Annicka Hernandez placed 28th.

Paloma Salazar of Wichita Northwest topped the field of 42 in 23:09.88.
