WELLINGTON — There’s strength in numbers for the Winfield High School girls golf team.

The Lady Vikings captured the team title on a beautiful Monday afternoon at the Wellington Invitational at the Wellington Golf Club, winning the meet by 12 strokes ahead of defending KSHSAA Class 4A State champion Buhler.

“Buhler will be one of the top teams in the state,” WHS coach Dave Bertholf said. “Wellington is a tricky little golf course, so I think the margin of victory may be a little misleading.”

Winfield’s top four golfers produced a team 184 in the nine-hole meet, 12 better than AV-CTL D-III foe Buhler. The host Lady Crusaders (203) were third at the seven-team meet.

The Lady Vikings fired three of the top five scores.

Elly Bertholf carded a 43, two strokes off the lead. Chaney Littell was three strokes off the lead and Celine Mendoza finished four strokes back, placing third, fourth and fifth, respectively.

Callie Cooper of Buhler took the individual title after a scorecard playoff with  Payton Ginter of Wellington after they each shot a 41.

Savanna Nickum (52) tied for 13th and Dalin Bartel (53) tied for 15th for Winfield.

The Lady Vikings were slated to have split squads Tuesday, with one group at the Andover Invitational and the other at the Newton Invitational.

“With COVID-19 restrictions, tournaments are limiting their field,” Bertholf said. “I wanted to get all our girls on the course, so our team scores will not be great, but at least our girls are playing. I didn’t want to leave any at home. I think it will make us stronger in post season.”
