BURDEN — The South Haven High School girls basketball team kept paced atop the log-jammed South Central Border League standings with a 61-16 victory Friday night at Central of Burden.

The Lady Cardinals (13-3, 5-0 SCBL) are tied with West Elk (15-0) and Argonia (12-2) with unblemished records in league play.

“We ran into a buzz saw tonight against South Haven,” Central coach Gregg Mettling said. “They are quick and run the floor very well. But we were able to work on some things within our offense against pressure and got better.”

South Haven jumped ahead 21-7 in the first quarter and held the Lady Raiders (0-14, 0-5) to a Morgan Cook bucket in a 22-2 second quarter to boost the halftime lead to 43-9. Mariah Newberry came off the bench with a 3-pointer in South Haven’s big quarter.

Central battled back in the third quarter, but was shut out down the stretch.

Brittney Byers scored a game-high 18 points before sitting out the entire second half for the Lady Cardinals, who were 11 of 20 from the foul line.

All nine South Haven players scored, with Alyssa Bridges adding 11 points. Freshman Kamdyn Butler scored eight second-half points off the bench.

Freshman Emily Long had six points, all in the first quarter, to lead the Lady Raiders, who were 4 of 13 from the line.

“Harley (Branscum) and Morgan (Cook) rebounded well for us tonight. Maddie (Brogan) and Hannah (Veale) came off the bench and gave us a lot of quality minutes,” Mettling said. “The girls are getting better with their ball-handling against pressure. One of these nights it will pay off for them.”
