Host Lady Bulldogs defeat arch rival Winfield, but it’s in consolation round

Arkansas City High School senior libero Lauren Camp goes to her knees on a diving dig Saturday against Clearwater in the first round of pool play at the Arkansas City Invitational in The Dawg Pound. Juniors Hadley Colquhoun (8) and Hailey Trent watch the action.

Consolation was the word of the day for the Arkansas City and Winfield volleyball teams Saturday at the Arkansas City Invitational in The Dawg Pound.

The tournament format was changed because Towanda-Circle had to cancel, leaving nine teams in the tournament. That meant three round-robin brackets of three teams each competed in the first round, followed by a  second round of cross-bracketing.

Neither the host Lady Bulldogs or the Lady Vikings advanced to the championship round; however, the two arch rivals met in a consolation match.

Winfield took the opening set in the consolation match, but the Lady Bulldogs bounced back to complete a 25-27, 25-17, 25-18 victory.

The Goddard Lady Lions, who only dropped one set on the entire day, rolled to the championship with a 25-15, 25-17 straight-sets victory against Wichita Northwest. Belle Plaine defeated Andover Central 23-25, 25-23, 25-22 for third place.

The Lady Bulldogs went 1-1 in the first round of pool play. They opened the day with a 25-23, 24-26, 25-19 triumph against Clearwater. Ark City then fell to Wichita Northwest 25-13, 25-14.

Winfield also went 1-1 in the first round of pool play, opening with a 25-5, 25-17 victory against Wichita South. The Lady Vikings then fell to Goddard 25-14, 25-9.

In the second round cross-bracketing of pool play, Ark City opened with a 25-23, 25-14 victory against Mulvane, but fell to the eventual champion Lady Lions 25-22, 25-14.

The Lady Vikings also were 1-1 in the second round, opening with a 25-17, 19-25, 25-20 triumph against Clearwater, but falling to Andover Central 25-19, 25-14.

Goddard advanced to the title match with a 21-25, 25-18, 25-16 victory against Belle Plaine. Wichita Northwest advanced with a 25-8, 25-19 triumph against Andover Central.

Senior Maggie Musson led the Lady Bulldogs with 49 kills, including a team-high 18 against Winfield, to go with 49 assists and 40 digs. Senior Taryn Rich added 30 kills, half coming against the Lady Vikings, and pulled up 48 digs to go with four blocks.

Junior Hailey Trent led the way with 64 assists to go with 33 digs. Senior Lauren Camp recorded 49 digs and served 45 of 46 with four aces. Junior Hadley Colquhoun was a perfect 48 of 48 from the line with two aces.

“Our only two losses on the day were to the two teams that took home first and second,” ACHS coach Lacy Colquhoun said. “We have to go into every match like we are going to win. When we play with energy and team chemistry, we play much better and it was obvious that our level was down against Goddard and Northwest. We did have some positive things to take away from Saturday. Whenever you win more than you lose, it’s a good day.”

Senior Chloe Hoffman led the Lady Vikings with 18 kills, while senior Ali Tate pounded 15, senior Paulina Gorska 12 and junior Haley Gedrose had 11 kills and 34 digs, including 15 against the Lady Bulldogs.

Gedrose dished out 18 assists and senior Emmah Sultz offered 17 assists to go with 28 digs. Senior Sydney Russell pulled up a team-high 44 digs, 15 against Andover Central.

Junior Kylar Graham served in just three of Winfield’s five matches, but went 35 of 37 with a team-high five aces — four against Wichita South. Sultz served 46 of 51 with a pair of aces, while Hoffman missed just 1 of 35 tries.

Ark City joins Andover for an AV-CTL D-II triangular at 5 p.m. today at Valley Center.

The Lady Vikings and Wichita Collegiate are at a 5 p.m. nonleague triangular today at Wellington.
