TUCSON, Ariz. — Cowley College’s No. 1 doubles team of sophomores Bruno Hidaka Suiama and Angelo Yasuro Ito Tost defeated East Florida’s Adriel Azucey and Frederik Oervad 7-5, 7-5 in Thursday’s semifinal match at the NJCAA Division I Men’s National Championships.
The duo advanced to play for the National title Friday morning against the tandem of Alex Parker and Marcus Walters of Tyler Junior College.
Suiama lost his semifinal match 6-2, 6-2 against top-seeded Luke Simkiss of Tyler Junior College at No. 2 singles.
Valter Kenji Imura Oshiro fell 6-1, 6-1 to top-seeded Andres Cabezas of ASA Miami at No. 4 singles.
Oshiro and doubles partner Casey Edwards also battled hard before losing their semifinal match 6-4, 7-6 at No. 3 doubles to a team from ASA Miami.
The Tigers remained in fourth place at the National tournament with 29 1/2 team points.
ASA Miami and Tyler Junior College are still tied for first place with 44 points, while Seward County is third with 32 1/2 points.
No. 2 — Bruno Hidaka Suiama (CC) lost to Luke Simkiss (Tyler) 6-2, 6-2 in the semifinals.
No. 4 — Valter Kenji Imura Oshiro (CC) lost to Andres Cabezas (ASA Miami) 6-1, 6-1 in the semifinals.
No. 1 — Bruno Hidaka Suiama/Angelo Yasuro Ito Tost (CC) def. Adriel Azucey/Frederik Oervad (E. Florida) 7-5, 7-5.
No. 3 — Casey Edwards/Valter Kenji Imura Oshiro (CC) lost to Andres Cabezas/Tomas Santantonio (ASA Miami) 6-4, 7-6 in the semifinals.
