COLUMBUS, Neb. — The No. 10-ranked Cowley College volleyball team compiled a 4-0 record at the weekend Ramada Inn Volleyball Classic.
The Lady Tigers (24-2) defeated Northeast, North Platte, Bismarck State and Southwestern Community College to increased their winning streak to 21 matches in a row.
“Coming off of the strong win over KCK, we managed to continue the momentum going into the matches this weekend. We had a few dips to let go of some leads we had built, but other than the one set in the Bismarck State match, we managed to right the ship and pull away from our opponents,” Cowley coach Steven Gream said.
Cowley used solid serving, combined with a balanced attack and speed of the offense Friday to beat Northeast 25-16, 25-14, 28-26.
Iva Halacheva led the team with 13 kills, while Kadie Smith had eight kills and a .471 hitting percentage. Elina Zlateva added eight kills, while Caroline Foster recorded her 14th double-double with 34 assists and 13 digs. Alejandra Delgado recorded 20 digs to lead the defense. Cowley hit .302 with 43 kills, seven aces, 62 digs, and four blocks.
The Lady Tigers battled North Platte to a 25-22, 25-18, 25-20 triumph.
Halacheva led all players with 12 kills while hitting .321.
Zlateva had 11 kills and a .391 hitting mark. Smith recorded seven kills, Stephanie Bray added six and Hannah Vanriette recorded five. Foster dished out 37 assists and Delgado led with 15 digs.
Cowley came out aggressive Saturday against Bismarck State and held set point in the first set, but had to battle for a 30-32, 25-10, 25-14, 25-17 victory.
The Lady Tigers outhit Central .340 to .166 and recorded 68 kills to 43 for Bismarck State. Cowley also reeled 11 aces.
Halacheva led the way with 23 kills while hitting .442, and recorded her first career double-double with 10 digs. Zlateva and Vanriette added 14 kills each, a season high for Vanriette. Smith recorded 11 kills and hit .348. Foster dished out a career high 60 assists and Delgado led the way with a career high 30 digs.
The Lady Tigers had a much easier time against Southwestern CC, rolling to a 25-12, 25-12, 25-10 win.
Cowley outhit the Lady Spartans .403 to .011.
Halacheva against led the way with a season high 12 kills while hitting .529. Zlateva and Smith added six kills each. Foster dished out 30 assists, and Delgado and Foster led with 10 digs. Foster recorded her 15th double-double with 30 assists and 10 digs. Delgado recorded three service aces to give her 144 in her career, third all-time in Cowley history.
The Lady Tigers return home at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday to resume Jayhawk Conference play against Hesston.
