BUHLER — The Winfield High School volleyball team returned to AV-CTL D-III action Tuesday night, but the Lady Vikings won just one set in losing both matches of a triangular.
Winfield fell 25-14, 23-25, 25-17 to host Buhler and lost 25-22, 25-21 to Augusta.
The Lady Vikings (12-22, 1-8 AV-CTL D-III) were close in most of the sets, but it wasn’t enough.
“We just couldn’t get past the hump tonight,” WHS coach Aubree Vargas said. “Every time we would get on a roll we would have a missed serve and it would ruin our momentum.”
Winfield was just 88 percent (36 of 41) serving against the Lady Orioles (16-13, 2-5), with three aces. The percentage dropped to 83 percent (45 of 54) with four aces in the loss to the host Lady Crusaders (18-11, 6-4).
Senior Chloe Hoffman led the hitting attack with 11 kills, six against Buhler. Senior Paulina Gorska added seven kills, four against the Lady Crusaders, and totaled 18 digs on the day. Senior Emmah Sultz dished out 26 assists, 14 in the loss to Buhler, and added 13 digs in that match.
Freshman Curtis Crosby, fresh up from the junior varsity, registered 22 digs in each match. She was 15-of-15 serving in the triangular, with an ace in each match.
Senior Sydney Russell had 20 digs, 15 against Buhler. Sultz went 17 of 19 from the line, while Hoffman was 15 of 16, 9 of 9 with an ace against Augusta. Junior Haley Gedrose reeled off a pair of aces in the Buhler match.
The Lady Vikings end the regular season with a 5 p.m. Oct. 22 triangular against Andale and McPherson.
