Two days after an emotional buzzer-beating win against No. 4-ranked Hutchinson, the Cowley College women’s basketball team struggled offensively Monday night in a 73-60 loss to Coffeyville at W.S. Scott Auditorium.

The loss was a damaging one in the conference for the Lady Tigers (15-4, 5-4 Jayhawk East), who fell two games behind conference-leading Butler and one game behind both Coffeyville and Independence.

The game was tied 11-11 after one quarter of play and the Cowley led 18-14 two minutes into the second quarter before the Lady Red Ravens (16-3, 6-3) closed the half on a 15-3 run to lead 29-21.

Cowley shot only 25 percent in the opening half.

Trailing 42-35 after three quarters, the Lady Tigers scored the first 10 points of the fourth quarter to lead 45-35. However, the Lady Ravens hit four 3-pointers during a 14-0 run that pushed their lead back to double figures.

Cowley pulled to within 58-51 following a 3-pointer by freshman Torri Vang with 3:05 remaining, but the Lady Ravens answered with a trey by Kailyn Lay and were not threatened again.

Coffeyville outshot the Lady Tigers 40.3 percent to 32.8 percent from the floor and outrebounded Cowley 50-30.

“Coffeyville is a bad matchup for us,” Cowley coach Todd Clark said. “Our rebounding was awful and I was really disappointed in our effort.”

Shontrice Austin, who hit the game-winning shot Saturday against Hutchinson, led Cowley with 19 points, five rebounds and five assists. Jayden Marlnee just missed her second straight double-double, finishing with 12 points and nine boards, while Vang came off the bench to score 14 of her 16 points after halftime.

Julia Calafell led Coffeyville with 18 points, while Faith Simpson came off the bench to add 12 points and a game-high 13 rebounds.

The Lady Tigers play at 5:30 p.m. at Neosho County (5-10, 0-8).

“Neosho (County) is always a tough place to play,” Clark said. “We can’t shoot it like we did on Monday if we want to win.”
