WICHITA — The Arkansas City High School boys basketball team did not head into Christmas break the way it had hoped, falling Friday night at Maize South 63-50 in AV-CTL D-II play.

The Bulldogs (3-2, 1-1 AV-CTL D-II) stayed with Maize South throughout the night, but the host Mavericks (3-1, 1-1) systematically pulled away from a 26-21 halftime lead.

Brock Merz led Ark City with 10 points, while Doug Stewart and Cadon Clark added nine points apiece. The Bulldogs were 4 of 8 from the foul line.

Trey Reed led three players in double figures with 24 points for the Mavericks, who were 6 of 8 from the line. Adam Kasitz added 16 points and Ben Crowell drained four baskets from 3-point range in a 14-point effort.

The Arkansas City High School girls basketball team scored more points in the first quarter Friday night than in the rest of the game combined in a 66-25 loss at Maize South in AV-CTL D-II play.

The Lady Bulldogs (0-5, 0-2 AV-CTL D-II) jumped out with a 13-point first quarter. However, they managed just 12 more points the rest of the way.

Maize South led 33-18 at halftime.

Braylee Ruyle was the only Ark City player with more than five points, draining a pair of 3-pointers in a 10-point effort. The Lady Bulldogs shot just two free throws.

Katie Wagner poured in 31 points, including 9 of 11 from the foul line, for the Lady Mavericks (4-0, 2-0), who were 12 of 17 from the line overall. Kaydyn Davison buried three shots from beyond the arc in an 11-point effort for Maize South.
