WICHITA — The sky was the limit for Arkansas City High School golfer Trent Sutherland last year.

As a freshman in his high school debut, Sutherland qualified for the Class 4A State meet, finishing in a tie for 17th with a 76. He placed eighth in the Class 4A Regionals that year with a 79 and was named to the All-State second team.

Call it a sophomore jinx.

Sutherland missed the State cut by one stroke Monday at the Class 5A Regional Championships at Rolling Hill Country Club, finishing in a tie for 21st with an 82.

The top three teams, along with the top five individuals on other teams, qualified for the KSHSAA Class 5A State Championships next Monday at Mariah Hill Golf Course in Dodge City.

Regional champion Andover Central will be joined by runner-up Bishop Carroll and third-place Kapaun Mt. Carmel in the Big Show.

Sutherland opened with a 40, but needed two more strokes on the back nine. He would have been the next individual to punch a ticket to State.

Senior Jace Womack ended his high school career 31st. After opening with an impressive 41, Womack needed nine more strokes after the turn, finishing with a 91.

Cooper Schultz of Andover Central won the title with a 67.
