The Cowley College women’s basketball team used a smothering defense Saturday to defeat Barton 65-56 at W.S. Scott Auditorium.

The Lady Tigers (9-0, 5-0 Jayhawk Division I) limited Barton to 32-percent shooting and forced the Lady Cougars (6-3, 3-2) into 23 turnovers.

“I am shocked by the 23 turnovers,” Cowley coach Todd Clark said. “That was big for us because Barton is a good team.”

Cowley trailed 10-8 at the end of the first quarter before grabbing a 24-21 halftime lead.

Sophomore guard Kaitlyn Potter buried a 3-pointer to snap a 51-51 tie and give the Lady Tigers the lead for good.

Potter finished with a game-high 32 points to go along with six rebounds and three steals. Potter went 6 of 18 from 3-point range and is averaging 25.2 points per game on the season.

Fellow sophomore Samantha Schwab added nine points and 10 rebounds to increase her team-leading rebound average to 8.9 per game.

Freshman guard Kendranea’ Addison came off the bench to add 11 points, four rebounds and three assists.

Jaylin Stapleton led the Lady Cougars with 15 points.

The Lady Tigers play at 6 p.m. Wednesday at No. 8-ranked Seward County. The Lady Saints (6-1, 4-1) whipped Pratt 81-32 on Saturday.

“This is a good start for us, but we need to get more solid in a lot of spots,” Clark said.
