Vikings place third at home invitational

Winfield High School junior Caden Roark comes up for air in the 100-yard freestyle Thursday afternoon at the Winfield Invitational in the White P.E. Building on the campus of Southwestern College. Roark won the event in 52.42 seconds.

Winfield High School boys swimming coach Dustin Durbin seemed pleased with the results Thursday afternoon at the 11-team Winfield Invitational in the White P.E. Building on the campus of Southwestern College.

The Vikings placed a strong third, behind only Metro school behemoths Maize and Maize South.

“Each of the 12 guys can have two individual entries, so that is a total of 24, and of those 24, last night 17 of them were new best times,” Durbin said.

Junior Caden Roark captured the gold medal in the 100-yard freestyle, shaving nearly two seconds off of his previous best while winning the event in 52.42 seconds.

Roark was runner-up in the 200 free, cutting almost five seconds off of his previous best with a 1:55.52 finish — a state-qualifying mark.

“He put on two amazing races. He cut 4.83 seconds in the 200 free and moved up into second place while making a state-qualifying time in that event for the first time this season,” Durbin said. “Caden usually swims the 500 free and or the 100 back, but we mixed things up and put him in the 100 free this meet. He went a 52.42, qualified for State, and moved from an original fifth-place seeding to winning the event from the outside lane.

“He delivered on the relays, too, and suffice it to say had the best I’ve ever seen him have thus far in three seasons.”

Roark joined Trevor Martin, Bow Gray and Albert Compala to open the meet with a second-place finish in the 200 medley relay in 1:56.24, topping their season best by nearly two seconds. The same quartet then capped the meet as runners-up in the 400 free relay in 3:47.65, dropping that time by 9.86 seconds.

Sophomore Trent Stewart placed third in the 1-meter diving, scoring 133.10 points. Fellow soph Seth Warren was fourth (111.30) in his first time competing in the event.

“Seth Warren dove for the first time all season last night, and Trent improved by over 27 points from the prior time he competed this year,” Durbin noted.

Gray placed fourth in the 100 backstroke and sixth in the 100 butterfly. Compala was seventh in both the 200 individual medley and 50 free.

Compala was joined in the IM by seniors Trevor Martin and Maksym Khomenko, and all three improved their times by around 4 1/2 seconds. Khomenko also was more than 35 seconds faster than his previous best in the 100 breaststroke.

Freshman Nico Cantu competed in the 500 free for the first time, and was nearly 3 1/2 minutes faster than his practice time this season. Warren also competed in the event, shaving more than three minutes off of his previous best.

The Vikings return to the water Tuesday at Haysville-Campus.
