SC comeback falls short

Southwestern College senior guard Brittany Lawler bullies past two Avila defenders for a layup Wednesday at Stewart Field House.

The Southwestern College women’s basketball team fell 67-59 to Avila in KCAC play Wednesday at Stewart Field House.

Both teams struggled to put the ball in the basket in the first quarter, with each hitting just one of their first 10 shot attempts.

The Lady Builders (4-3, 1-2 KCAC) began 1 of 14 from the floor and had just three points until senior Jazmyne Laskey hit a shot from half court as time expired.

After falling behind 18-13, Southwestern put on a 7-0 run to take the lead for the first time, capped with a 3-pointer by senior Brittany Lawler for a 20-18 lead.

The Lady Eagles (3-0, 3-0) answered with a 10-0 run to close the first half with a 28-20 lead.

It was all Lady Eagles in the third quarter, using a 7-0 run to add to their lead. Avila outscored the Lady Builders 27-8 in the third quarter, building a 27-point lead heading into the final frame.

The tables turned in the fourth quarter as the Lady Builders began the final frame on a 16-4 run. They drew as close as nine points on a couple of occasions, but ran out of time.

Senior Marissa Evans, who was a big part of the comeback efforts in the fourth quarter, finished with 16 points and five steals, 14 points coming in the fourth quarter. Senior Makala Canada was also key off the bench in the final period, ending with nine points and a game-high six assists.
