Vikes grounded by Jags

Winfield High School senior Ryker Hill, right, battles for control of the ball with Andover Central forward Leyton Harper during first-half action Thursday on the pitch at Richard L. Jantz Stadium.

The Winfield High School boys soccer team was overwhelmed Thursday afternoon by undefeated Andover Central in a 9-0 nonleague loss on the pitch at Richard L. Jantz Stadium.

“We have played some high level 5A teams this year (Valley Center, Goddard Eisenhower) and this was our best effort,” WHS coach Charles Osen said.

“We played a very smart first 38 minutes. Unfortunately, we allowed two goals in the last two minutes, which really changed the game. We battled in the second half, but I felt they took the wind out of our sails with two more quick goals in the second half.”

Jadyn Vossen recorded a natural hat by scoring the first thee goals of the game for the visiting Jaguars, scoring his last with 1:27 left in the first half. Leo Wurth made it 4-0 with a score with nine seconds before the intermission.

Leyton Harper, who assisted Vossen on the first score of the game, recorded a natural hat trick of his own after the break, two of them coming in the first four minuted of the second half.

Jared Cromly and Blake Fimreite added late scores for the Jaguars (5-0), who outshot Winfield 32-0.

Senior Victor Peroo recorded 11 saves in goal for the Vikings (3-3) before giving way to sophomore Garrett Smith, who stopped five shots.

“It will sound crazy when you lose by nine, but Victor Peroo played really well tonight,” Osen said.

“And Garrett Smith got his varsity experience and performed fine, as well. We just couldn’t connect any passes offensively and our defense was under attack all night long. We have to be able to put passes together against everyone, but especially a talented team like Andover Central.”

The Vikings remain home Tuesday to face Augusta.
