The Arkansas City High School football team used some explosive plays in the first half and a tenacious defense when it counted in a wild 27-21 victory against Goddard at Bulldog Stadium.
Junior quarterback Gabe Welch threw for 299 yards and four first-half touchdowns. In fact, all four of his first-half completions went for scores.
Welch found Cadon Clark near midfield, and Clark did the rest, cutting right and rambling untouched for an 83-yard touchdown on Ark City's third play from scrimmage.
Clark hit Trevor Pierce on a 27-yard touchdown strike in the second quarter.
The Lions marched downfield, but Pierce stepped in front of a Lake Hamilton pass for an interception in the end zone. Ark City quickly capitalized when Welch found Lucas Barnes near midfield and Barnes ran the rest of the way untouched for an 80-yard touchdown.
The Ark City defense again held the Lions on fourth down, and Welch wasted little time, hooking up with Pierce on a 49-yard touchdown pass to give the Bulldogs a 27-14 halftime lead.
Goddard made it a six-point game and took the ball back on its own 7-yard line with 57.4 seconds remaining, but the defense held and Hamilton threw incomplete on fourth down, sealing the victory.
