Thompson is new Winfield Mayor

Winfield Mayor Greg Thompson, left, presents former mayor Phil Jarvis with a plaque as a thank-you for the latter’s service as the previous mayor, at Monday’s city commission meeting.

Winfield City Commissioner Greg Thompson was sworn in as mayor Monday during the governing body’s first meeting of 2021.

Thompson replaces former mayor Phil Jarvis, who will remain on the board. The board’s third member, Ron Hutto, was sworn in as the presiding officer. The presiding officer leads commission meetings when the mayor is absent.

At Monday’s meeting, Thompson presented Jarvis with a plaque in recognition of his service as mayor.

Thompson told the CourierTraveler Wednesday that he is “proud to be able to serve.” He initially served on the commission from 1997 to 2001, and again since 2011.

Mayors of Winfield are not elected directly. Instead, the position rotates among the three members of the city commission, with each member serving at least one one-year term as mayor during their tenure on the board.
