Editor’s note: This essay by Arkansas City Middle School eighth-grader Karsyn Bernd was one of two winning essays in this year’s Patriot Pen contest sponsored by the VFW.
My pledge to our veterans is to live in a way that honors the sacrifices that they have made. I will carry with me the memories of all the people who have served and who have touched my life including friends and family members. I will surround myself with strong people, including veterans. All Americans should continuously remember the sacrifices of the people who have served and fought for our country. I plan on accomplishing this in three ways; daily, in my immediate future, and my distant future.
I plan on keeping my pledge to the veterans daily by focusing on school to graduate high school on time. Education is the most necessary thing to allow yourself to be a productive member of society. I plan to live my life by incorporating the examples set forth by all of our armed forces, integrity, teamwork, and service over self. I also believe in serving your community by participating in programs such as canned food drives, donating to the Ronald McDonald House, supporting the local food bank, and keeping your community clean.
My plan for the immediate future is to further my education by going to college. Over 50% of Kansas students don’t graduate on time from college. This is one of the biggest challenges facing our country today, unmotivated and uneducated youth. I want to continue to volunteer in my community, to be of service to those around me, and to lead by action, just like the men and women of our armed forces. My goal is to work for the benefit of others and to be a benefit to my fellow peers and members of my community.
At this time, the distant future seems somewhat unpredictable with the challenges we face in today’s world. Veterans face joblessness and homelessness at rates we have never seen before, and all I can control is how I meet this uncertain future. My pledge to veterans is to use my education to help resolve these challenges, whether it be volunteering through a non-profit or running for office, I will try to do my best to meet these challenges with optimism and an eye on the future, working to resolve these issues for the benefit of the veterans and our communities.
In closing, I believe all we can do is follow the examples set by the generations of the service men and women of the armed forces that came before us. Living our lives to the fullest extent by taking advantage of these freedoms provided to us by these brave men and women.
