Structure, trailers ignited during fire

A structure and multiple flatbed trailers were damaged Easter Sunday after a grass fire spread out of control, according to emergency communication recordings.

The Arkansas City Fire Department was called around noon on Sunday to 7196 252nd Road for a grass fire spreading rapidly, with about 50 feet burning. A barn was reported within 10 feet of the fire and multiple car trailers were beginning to burn, a recording shows.

While fire personnel were mobilizing, the barn was reported on fire.

Winfield and Udall departments were prompted to respond for assistance. A deputy assisted with traffic control on U.S. 77 Highway just north of 252nd Road due to heavy smoke covering the roadway, according to a recording.

Fire crews were able to control the fire in about an hour and personnel were being released from the scene around 1:10 p.m., Winfield Fire Chief Vince Warren said.
